Theme : Excellency of Styling

Yohji says that he's hardly impressed by the work of other fashion designers, but that he sometimes happens to be amazed by the sense of a stylist.

When you look at today’s fashion scene, the creativity might be, for a fact, rather in the styling of how to coordinate the different clothes together, than in the conception of the clothes-making itself. Basically, styling is about finding the right equation in combining clothes in different fabrics, colors and shapes within one same silhouette. When you think about it, this is an exercise that every one of us does every single morning before leaving home!! And that process is highly creative, almost as creative as making things.

Yohji has specific ways to prepare his shows. In the process of casting, where he has to decide of the outfits to be attributed to each selected model, it is crucial for him to leave a sense of the moment, not to think too much with the brain but to feel more of the instant inspiration. So there’s not a single outfit that is pre-selected before he arrives to Paris, barely 2 days before the show. All the styling of the collection is done in the heat of the action. He needs to see the clothes under the Paris light. The light under which his show actually takes place. Neither he does any rehearsal for the shows. He believes in the happy accidents that could occur at any time of this whole creative process.

“Have you met Yohji Yamamoto? Because as soon as you do, you realize his menswear line is utterly, unequivocally him. Yamamoto is insanely stylish. A bit loose, a bit louche, definitely relaxed, intrinsically confident...”
